CLAT Topper Interview 2017: In conversation with Rajat Maloo- AIR 1

The CLAT 2017 results were declared on the night of May 29, 2017 and the fate of over 48,000 students was sealed. It was a lovely surprise for a boy in Jaipur who had got All India Rank 1 with a score of 154.25 out of 196 – Rajat Maloo.

Rajat being a science student traditionally as it happens attempted JEE Main last year and could not succeed. With a percentage of 74 in 12th standard could have been considered average by many. But he chose to go for his passion with his interest in fighting for the rights of people and getting them justice. To fulfill his dream he took an year drop and successfully not just managed to clear the examination but also  was able to secure AIR 1.

In an interview with Law Gurukul Rajat shares his experience, strategy and his advice for future CLAT aspirants. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Law Gurukul: What was your first reaction after you saw your result?

Rajat Maloo:

I was expecting a single digit rank but 1st rank was a pleasant surprise. Although throughout my preparation I believed that I could achieve it.

Law Gurukul: Tell us about your preparation strategy.

Rajat Maloo:

I knew that GK was my weak section from the beginning, so I focussed on it during my preparation. I read newspapers regularly which helped me with both GK and English. I was good at maths and logical from the beginning so didn’t need much preparation for it but still I practiced them. For legal I used to refer to my coaching material.

Law Gurukul: What was your strategy for time management in CLAT?

Rajat Maloo:

I gave around 7 minutes for GK, 35 for legal, 20 minutes for English (leaving the comprehension which I did at the end), for logical I gave 30 minutes and for maths 20 minutes. One must be accurate with increasing speed and this can be done through attempting a lot of mocks.

Law Gurukul: Tell us about your interests apart from studies?

Rajat Maloo:

Apart from studies I love to read novels and play badminton and guitar.

Law Gurukul: What are your future plans after completing Law?

Rajat Maloo:

I’ve not decided about it yet and I’d like to explore various options during studying law.

Law Gurukul: What was your strategy for each section in CLAT?

Rajat Maloo:

For English I used to read and memorise new words daily. Apart from this I referred to a book called Word Power Made Easy. For maths and logical I didn’t prepare more than my coaching material because was good at them. For legal, mocks and past year papers helped me a lot. For GK I read newspaper regularly and used to refer to some websites for quizzes.

Law Gurukul: What will be your advice to future CLAT aspirants?

Rajat Maloo:

One must be regular during the preparation and avoid distractions like social media as much as possible. Avoid everything that wastes time and instead play some sport or musical instrument. Always talk to your parents or friends whenever you’re feeling low and never lose hope.
